Why Do The Right Thing in the Bostheater?

This film, nominated for an Academy Award for best screenplay, is a real cult film from 1989. Despite its age, this film is still frighteningly topical. The film is a powerful depiction of the tensions between Italian and black residents of a New York neighborhood and is full of commitment and light-hearted moments. The film has a powerful message and touches on themes such as diversity and inclusion. At the same time, the film remains accessible through the humor, music, pace and summer vibe.

Synopsis

It is the hottest day of the year in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York. In this mainly black neighborhood, the Italian immigrant Sal, with his sons Pino and Vito, has been running a successful pizzeria for years. However, the eldest son Pino is a racist and a troublemaker. He is constantly annoyed by the fact that his father gives a dollar every day to the local drunkard Mayor, who sweeps the sidewalk. When hot-headed rebel Bugging Out demands that Sal hang portraits of black celebrities on the wall of his store, which Sal refuses, all hell breaks loose. In less than 24 hours, the residents are brought to a boiling point, partly by the summer heat, partly by intolerance.

Starring Spike Lee, Danny Aiello (Oscar nomination), Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Samuel L. Jackson, John Savage, Martin Lawrence.
