Cinetree’s Forest Festival is back! From Thursday 6 to Saturday 8 August, you can once again enjoy some of the most beautiful, heartwarming, and acclaimed films at the Amsterdam Bostheater. On 6 August, we’re screening the Cinetree favourite Captain Fantastic.

Why Captain Fantastic at the Amsterdamse Bostheater?

It won’t have escaped your notice: we live in an era where computer and phone screens dominate our daily lives. This film shows that there is another way. In Captain Fantastic, nature is not just a backdrop—it is a character in its own right. The film raises profound questions about our modern, capitalist, technology-driven society versus a life lived in and with nature. But is life in the wilderness truly better? And doesn’t every choice come with its own challenges?

Captain Fantastic is not only a Cinetree favourite. Although the film did not win an Oscar, it received widespread international acclaim and became one of the most celebrated independent films of 2016.

About the Film

Deep in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, Ben raises his six children far away from screens and the pressures of modern society. Their days are filled with reading, hunting, climbing, and exploring nature together. But when a life-changing event forces the family to return to the outside world, their ideals are put to the test. Captain Fantastic is a heartwarming and thought-provoking family drama about parenting, conscious living, and our connection with the natural world. It’s no surprise that it has been one of Cinetree’s biggest favourites for years.

Special Programme

On Thursday 6 August, Eefke van der Wouw — speaker, moderator, and entrepreneur — will host a conversation with musician and climate activist FRÉ and Bibi Timmerman, storyteller and co-founder of the Out of Office Foundation.

Eefke works on social issues related to sustainability, biodiversity, and youth participation. In her work, she highlights the importance of the relationship between people and nature and explores how ecological and social challenges are interconnected. FRÉ (Frederike Berendsen) is a singer-songwriter, producer, and climate activist. She is co-founder of Music Declares Emergency Netherlands, a collective of artists and music professionals raising awareness about the climate and nature crisis. Through her work, she shows how art can contribute to awareness and positive change. Bibi Timmerman will also join the conversation. Drawing from her own experience with burnout, she developed programmes centred around nature, offline connection, and personal growth. FRÉ will also perform live music during the evening.

* A group ticket gives six people access to the film evening. With a group ticket, you receive a total discount of €10. You will receive one ticket that allows all six people to enter together (please make sure your entire group arrives and enters at the same time).
