YOU SHOULD GET RAPED

Lotte Laurens & Just van Bommel

On claiming your spot as predator and walking home safely.

From whom do we accept that they are perpetrators? Who is condemned to victimhood, and what happens when we turn that old narrative upside down?

A monologue about sexual violence and street harassment, in which a woman refuses her victimhood and takes on the role of perpetrator.

On an otherwise ordinary evening, a woman is on her way home. On the train, a man sits down opposite her. With ease, he takes up space and demands that she engage with him. At first flirtatious and charming, then increasingly threatening. The woman tries to ignore him, aware that rejecting him outright may only make things worse. Frustrated, the man eventually tells her she deserves to be raped. The evening takes a different turn when the young woman decides to follow him on his way home. She no longer wants to be a victim, and no longer wants to be afraid of walking home alone at night.

Inspired by Amia Srinivasan’s The Right to Sex and Virginie Despentes’ King Kong Theory, Lotte Laurens and Just van Bommel present a new perspective on sexual violence and street harassment, pushing the boundaries of our morality. Which means are justified in changing your position in society? And what is so shocking about a woman seeking out violence, when the reality—where women are daily harassed, threatened, and assaulted—no longer surprises us at all?
