The founding fathers of Mezrab and the Amsterdam Storytelling Festival, now operating as the brand-new Seraphim Foundation, are presenting their new production at the Amsterdamse Bostheater. My Brother’s Keeper is a blend of oral tradition and enchanting folk music, premiering at the Amsterdamse Bostheater.

Storytellers and close friends Sahand Sahebdivani and Raphael Rodan join forces once again. The theatre makers previously collaborated on their successful productions Kingdom of Fire and Clay, My Father Held a Gun (winner of the Amsterdam Fringe Gold Award in 2017), and Sons of Abraham.

Storytellers and close friends Sahand Sahebdivani and Raphael Rodan are joining forces once again. The theatre makers previously collaborated on their successful productions Kingdom of Fire and ClayMy Father Held a Gun (winner of the 2017 Amsterdam Fringe Gold Award) and Sons of Abraham.

Sahand and Raphael do not shy away from difficult questions; rather, they place them at the heart of their work. Drawing on family stories and oral traditions, they explore themes of cultural and religious conflict.

Their brand-new work, My Brother’s Keeper, brings these themes together through the primal tale of human violence: the story of Cain and Abel. In times of increasing polarisation and international hostility, they return to the fundamental question: why would a brother turn against his own flesh and blood?

Armenian singer Meri Kartashyan (known for her work with the Sushuki Band), her cousin, the duduk virtuoso Grigor Kartashyan, and percussionist Sjahin During weave their music through the performance’s narrative threads. Together, they provide the heartbeat of the story, drawing on the magical melodies of the Armenian tradition.

Through a blend of storytelling and (musical) theatre, the actors tell and retell the biblical story, spanning the course of history, whilst recognising Cain and Abel within themselves and in one another.

As perspectives shift, the roles are constantly reversed. Can the story itself be turned on its head? And can two strangers rediscover the brother within each other?

A production by the Seraphim Foundation.
