Layla & Majnun 

Layla is the Middle Eastern version of Romeo and Juliet. From childhood the two are inseparable, but Layla’s father forbids Layla to marry Majnun. They call him the madman because he loses himself in the love for Layla.

But does real love have boundaries? Did we not make love to rational? In this poetic show, Sia questions our compulsive longing for order, looking for answers on how to love. 

Last year, Sia performed as a storyteller at Mezrab in the Boslab Theaterfestival. This summer he explores how the imagination which a storyteller summons in words, can relate to a more theatrical telling and play in the forest.

Layla & Majnun is een Midden-oosten-variant van Romeo en Juliet. De twee zijn van jongs af aan samen, maar Layla’s vader verbiedt een huwelijk met Majnun, die wordt gezien als een ‘waanzinnige’. Hij is zo verliefd op Layla dat hij zichzelf in zijn liefde verliest.

Maar is grenzeloze liefde niet juist het mooiste waar we toe in staat zijn? Is onze drang naar orde, rationaliteit en norm niet een beschermingsmechanisme? Kiezen we ervoor te handelen uit liefde, of uit angst? In zijn poëtische tekst zoekt Sia antwoorden, om steeds meer vragen te vinden.

Sia speelde vorig jaar als storyteller bij Mezrab in het Boslab Theaterfestival. Deze zomer wil hij onderzoeken hoe de verbeelding die een verhalenverteller in woorden oproept, een theatrale relatie aan kan gaan met het bos, dat van oudsher symbool staat voor het onderbewuste en de verborgen verlangens en angsten van de mens.

About the maker / Over de maker:

Sia Cyrroes graduated as an actor on the theater school of Amsterdam. He played in tv shows like Bonnie & Clyde, Het Gouden Uur and SpangaS. Besides acting for tv and movies, he is also a theater maker. The Mezrab educated him and taught him the art of storytelling. Now he writes, makes and acts in his own shows.

Sia Cyrroes is als acteur afgestudeerd aan de toneelschool Amsterdam. Hij heeft gespeeld in series zoals Bonnie & Clyde, Het Gouden Uur en SpangaS. Daarnaast is hij theatermaker. Sia is vanuit de Mezrab opgeleid tot ‘verhalenverteller’ en schrijft, maakt en speelt in zijn eigen stukken.
