As the evening settles in, a spotlight starts its search for young blood. Light shatters on a sequin dress. There! A body crawls out of the stinking ditch. A Shining Star that hoarsely sings:

“Tonight!!! I gave the greatest performance of my life!!!”

A razor sharp stiletto darts through the spotlight and buries itself in the trunk of an old oak. A real icon has entered the forest grounds, and is not to be fucked with. In the distance A Motherfucking Diva appears on the bow of a phantom ship, sailing on former glory. There they are: a shining star, a real icon and a motherfucking diva. Sparkling like real stars: lonesomely smoldering in the distance.

‘DREAM BABY SCREAM’ is a site-specific grotesque and visual performance about the dark side of Showbizz. The American Dream gained foothold in Dutch territory. Inspired by the highly recognizable Hollywood movie genre musical biographical picture they dive into the tragedy that hides behind this insatiable generation. An intimate spectacle about those who will always yearn for sweet success.

“SPOTLIGHT! DRUM ROLL!”

De nacht valt. Een spotlicht zoekt naar vers bloed, als een telescoop naar onontdekte sterren. Licht spat uiteen op een paillettenjurk, daar kruipt een lichaam uit het stinkende slootwater. A shining star zingt volledig schor: “Tonight!!! I gave the greatest performance of my life!!!”

Een vlijmscherpe naaldhak schiet door het spotlicht en boort zich in de stronk van een oude eik. A real icon has entered the forest grounds, en laat niet met zich sollen. Iets verderop ontwaren we A motherfucking diva op de boeg van een spookschip, drijvend op vergane glorie. Daar zijn ze, a shining Star, a real Icon and a motherfucking Diva giving the greatest performance of their lives. Schitterend als echte sterren: eenzaam fonkelend op afstand.

‘DREAM BABY SCREAM’ is een groteske, beeldende locatievoorstelling over de donkere kant van Showbizz. The American Dream zet voeten aan Hollandse bodem. Geïnspireerd op het herkenbare Hollywood filmgenre musical biographical picture duiken de makers in de tragiek die schuilgaat achter deze ‘succesgeneratie’.

Een intiem spektakel over zij die streven naar het altijd onbereikbare succes.

‘DREAM BABY SCREAM’ door collectief The Midnight Specials (Just van Bommel, Laila Claessen en Lieke van der Vegt) wordt geproduceerd door het Boslab Theaterfestival in co-productie met VIA ZUID en Cultura Nova.

About the makers/ Over de makers

Lieke van der Vegt (1997, Ommen) graduated from the performance study programme at the Toneelacademie in Maastricht in 2020. Her roots lie around Zwolle, where she is now connected to Zwolse Theaters as artist in residence. She is also attached as a maker to Makershuis VAKTOR and VIA ZUID, talent development. In recent years, Lieke has created her own work under the wings of Theater Utrecht’s Innovation:Lab, DOX and the HKU, Theatergroup de jonge honden and the Amsterdam Bostheater, among others. In her work, she balances on the borders of experiential theatre and visual art, between theatrical and museale. She makes theatre, prefers to stay as far away as possible from what people already know.

Just van Bommel (they/she/he) (1999, Groningen) graduated as a Performer from the Toneelacademie Maastricht. After his graduation, she was selected for The Debut of Via Rudolphi with The Little Show (i.c.w. Emma van den Elshout), and made A DIVINE AVERSION TO DYING at Frascati Theatre (i.c.w. Diane Mahín and Lara van Hoof), where she has been attached as a maker since this year. Individually, Just likes to make performances about far too big topics (death, love, the strange gigantic systems and norms we as humans have devised), often resulting in the most sincere, overdramatic, often mega-personal but also mega-stylised shows possible.

Laila Claessen is a multidisciplinary theatre maker from the Netherlands, working in the fields of site-specific theatre, sensory food experiences and performance. Her work is covered in dark humor, childish philosophy, and ugly metaphors that twist and turn themselves in search for a bigger meaning. A cute but scary and most of all a disarming mash-up that makes her work recognizable and relatable. In addition to her work as a theater maker, she is currently also studying Vedic Sciences at the Delight Academy of Vedic Studies. She is currently investigating ways to connect these different worlds through her work.

Lieke van der Vegt (1997, Ommen) studeerde in 2020 af van de performance opleiding aan de Toneelacademie in Maastricht. Haar roots liggen rondom Zwolle, waar ze nu als artist in residence is verbonden aan Zwolse Theaters. Ook is ze als maker verbonden aan Makershuis VAKTOR en VIA ZUID, talentontwikkeling. Lieke heeft afgelopen jaren eigen werk gemaakt onder de vleugels van o.a. het Innovation:Lab van Theater Utrecht, DOX en de HKU, Theatergroep de jonge honden en het Amsterdamse Bostheater. In haar werk balanceert ze op de grenzen van ervaringstheater en beeldende kunst, tussen theatraal en museaal in. Ze maakt theater, maakt blijft het liefst zo ver mogelijk weg bij wat mensen al kennen.

Just van Bommel (hen/zij/hij) (1999, Groningen) studeerde in 2022 af als Performer van de Toneelacademie Maastricht. Na diens afstuderen werd ze geselecteerd voor Het Debuut van Via Rudolphi met Het Showtje (i.s.m. Emma van den Elshout), en maakte hij A DIVINE AVERSION TO DYING bij Frascati Theater (i.s.m. Diane Mahín en Lara van Hoof) waar ze sinds dit jaar als maker aan verbonden is. Individueel maakt Just graag voorstellingen over veel te grote onderwerpen (de dood, de liefde, de vreemde gigantische systemen en normen die we als mensen hebben bedacht), wat vaak resulteert in zo oprecht mogelijke, overdramatische, vaak mega persoonlijke maar ook mega gestileerde showtjes.

Laila Claessen is een multidisciplinaire theatermaker uit Nederland, werkzaam op het gebied van locatietheater, zintuiglijke voedselervaringen en performance. Haar werk is bedekt met donkere humor, kinderachtige filosofieën en lelijke metaforen die zichzelf verdraaien op zoek naar een grotere betekenis. Een schattige maar enge en vooral ontwapenende mengelmoes maakt haar werk herkenbaar. Daarnaast studeert ze Vedic Sciences aan de Delight Academy en en onderzoekt ze manieren om deze verschillende werelden aan elkaar te verbinden.
